Avon Federation of WI's Annual Quiz

This year we only entered one team to the Avon Federation's Annual Quiz.

Last year's winners of this event, the "Harbourside Harriers" with one substitution, travelled to the new venue for this event, at the Conygre Hall in Timsbury. This made us very appreciative of the effort made in past years by other WI teams coming to the Somerset Hall to attend.

Also new this year was the Quiz Master (or should we say Mistress?) who had compiled a quiz of 9 rounds of 10 questions each, plus a Picture Gallery round of 20 photo's for completion during the refreshment break.

Before each 10 question round we had to decide if we wished to play our Joker to double the score for the round or not. This choice had been made more perplexing by the scoring, although each round had 10 questions some questions had more than one part. We had to decide did we play our joker on a round worth 10 points where we were confident of a good score for the subject, or go for a round worth up to 14 points for a subject we were less sure about? This decision was made even more thought provoking by the cryptic nature of some of the round titles. One round was called "A piece of Kate" which most teams thought would be something to do with Kate Middleton and the Royal Family, it turned out to be questions relating to people live or fictional who were called Kate, Katie, Catherine, Katherine or any other version of the name!

We had a thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking evening and attained a score of 114 out of a possible maximum of 145. Our lowest scoring round was 8 points (previous years had been as low as 3 points) with our highest round score being 26 for our joker round on Entertainment.

We thought we had done quite well, little did we know we were up against some strong opposition! Chew Magna lifted the shield with 126 points, closely followed by Rangeworthy with 125 points and in third place Wrington with 124 points. We think we probably came 7th or 8th out of about 40 teams. We look forward to attempting to regain the Shield next year.
