Activities

Longwell Green Women's Institute activities to which all members are welcome

Book Clubs: We have four clubs. Chosen books, sourced from the local library, are read by the groups and then discussed at the meetings. It is always surprising where these discussions lead!

  • Book Club 1 meets roughly six-weekly at the Blue Bowl in Hanham.
  • Book Club 2 meets monthly on a Monday morning at a member's home.
  • Book Club 3 meets as arranged by members in the evening at a member's home.
  • Book Club 4 meets monthly on the last Tuesday of the month at the Chapel Café, Longwell Green.

Craft Club: We hope to arrange two full day craft sessions in Spring and Autumn.  So far crafts have included jewellery making, card making, knitting, patchwork, Christmas decorations, wreaths and sugarcraft.

Knitting Club: This is held once a month in a member’s home for experienced knitters and for beginners who want to learn to knit. Everyone makes various items for charities such as knee blankets for care home clients, children's jumpers and cardigans for the Bristol royal Infirmary shop, and mufflers, hats and mittens for seamen working in the North Sea.

Skittles: Meetings as arranged when suitable venues can be found.

Social Suppers: Evening meals at local restaurants are arranged about three times a year.

Tea & Chat: – If you feel like having a chat with other members you could meet them at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green from 2.30pm on the first Thursday of the month.

Walking Groups: We have three walking groups to suit different walking abilities and to be able to include members who work or have grand-parent duties.

  • Family and Friends Walkers: This group includes family and friends. The walks are once a month on a Sunday as arranged.  The walks are usually five - seven miles long.  Members of the group take turns to organise a walk usually ending with a pub meal.  A walking weekend is organised each year.
  • Mid-week Walk and lunch: First Wednesday of the month just for members of Longwell Green WI. Members meet at 10.45am at Longwell Green Community Centre and car share to the walk area. A short walk is followed by a meal at lunch time.
  • Tuesday Happy Feet Walkers: Meet at 10.30am, usually at Longwell Green Community Centre, for short walks in the local area without having to drive to a starting point.   Members take it in turns to arrange the walks but there is no need to find a different route each time as the whole idea is to get some fresh air, exercise and enjoy each other’s company. Friends and/or children can be included.  Dates are as agreed by members.

From time to time we also hold other events such as a cream tea, social picnic or Pimms & Puds in the summer, and a quiz night.
