What Do We Do?
The Women’s Institute (WI) was established in 1915, and is based on the ideals of fellowship, truth, tolerance and justice, to give women a voice and to be a force for good in the community. Since 1915, the number of members has significantly increased, and its ambition has grown.
Marina WI was established in 2016, and since then, we have had at least 60 members. We are based within the Avon Federation. Marina WI is a trusted place for all women to share experiences and learn from each other.
We strive to be a bold voice representing women and the local community. To achieve this, we will promote our work, and we will always seek to be inclusive and flexible.
To advance our education, we set a varied and broad annual programme of speakers and activities to cover areas of local and national interest. For example, the work and life of a honey bee, the challenges of being a pantomime dame, keeping the Severn Estuary clear for shipping, and how the UK Meteorological Office provide our weather forecasts (particularly highlighting the impact of global warming).
For more information, please refer to our Our Programme.
Members can develop specialised knowledge through Our Clubs, workshops and organise trips.
The National Federation Women's Institute (NFWI) also provide educational courses through the Denman College.
What else do we do?
Marina WI can submit a proposed resolution to the National Federation Women's Institute (NFWI) to highlight a social, political or environmental issue. Resolutions are presented at the AGM annually, and after debates and votes, NFWI adopt a chosen resolution, and WI members play their part in achieving change on important issues. For more information, please refer to the Campaigns supported by the WI.
We respond to causes and appeals based on WI charitable objects. Please refer to our Our Charities for more information.
