President's May 2023 Address

Born 1864 in Pennsylvania , USA, Elizabeth Cochran also known as Nellie Bly , was a journalist who took the drastic step ,aged 23 ,of having herself committed to the New York City asylum for vulnerable, mentally or physically ill women in order to expose the harsh conditions and cruelty patients faced .

She stayed there for 10 days and as a result of her expose , the city reformed the way they treated vulnerable people.

On her husbands death in 1904 she managed and restored his business. She understood the importance of treating her workers well . She introduced health care and fitness programmes for her workers and provided libraries to teach them to read.

She became famous when she reported on her travel around the world in 72 days and finding herself in Europe during WW1 she covered the war as a reporter.

Her final cause was the concern she had regarding orphanages.

She died in New York of pneumonia in 1922.
