Marina WI is based in Portishead (meaning ‘port at the head of the river’), a vibrant town of some 24,000 residents within the county of North Somerset.
Sited on the River Severn, we are close to Portbury and Avonmouth Docks, where the river winds its way inland to Bristol some ten miles away.
We enjoy waterside views from many vantage points looking across towards South Wales, and we are renowned for our beautiful sunsets.
The town was built adjacent to a historical working dockyard, which is now an active Marina, surrounded by townhouses and apartments. The busy town centre comprises of buildings from the Victorian era, and there is a wide range of independent shops and businesses.
We also have Portishead Open Air Pool (staffed mostly by volunteers), a range of green spaces, and a nature reserve. Portishead Lake Grounds (near the Esplanade) has a boating lake, Tennis Club and a Cricket Club. Community events are held here, such as food festivals, and raft and soap box races. The Marina WI enjoyed using the grounds to meet up outdoors during the period of Covid restrictions.
The Portishead Summer Show is held annually on the town’s show ground. Visitors travel from outside the area to enjoy our wonderful Christmas Lights.
There is a great community spirit in the town and there are many clubs, activities and events in Portishead run by volunteers and charities, which satisfy a wide variety of interests and needs, for residents and visitors of all ages.
Marina WI assist and participate in many of these events:
- Britain in Bloom Competition (Gardening Club). Portishead is a Gold Award winning town thanks to Portishead in Bloom. In 2021, Marina WI won an award for the flower border we maintain.
- Portishead Summer Show
- Portishead Raft Race
- Charity collections
